Aikido of Del Mar is committed to the teaching of Budo or martial way. Its holistic approach to traditional Yoshinkan Aikido training stresses strong posture, constant repetition of basic movements and techniques specifically designed to develop perfect balance, body center line, focus of power and breath power. At higher levels of training, timing and speed are added to achieve extremely powerful techniques with zero strength. Such training develops strong spirit and allows the vital energy of ki to flow at will in the body. At the same time students learn that good technique cannot be achieved without the proper attitude or state of mind. Aikido must be practiced with an open mind in a spirit of compassion and respect for each other. It is only when the body, mind and heart become one and in harmony that the technique is truly expressed. Yoshinkan Aikido is the official martial Art of the Tokyo riot police and compulsory training for Tokyo policewomen, making it a particularly efficient system for self-defense. However the “way” of Aikido is a way of life where “life” confounds with “way”. The art of Aikido is the sincere expression of one’s true self by means of the body. The ultimate goal is to express beauty and grace while pursuing self-knowledge and enlightenment.
Aiki-Youth Classes
Aikido of Del Mar offers Youth classes for students between the ages of 9 and 12. While the Aiki-Youth curriculum follows the adult curriculum closely, these classes are tailored for the specific needs and abilities of students who are too mature to be in the children’s classes, but not quite ready to take on the diversity of students, body types and age range that characterizes the Adult classes. In the Aiki-Youth classes we focus more heavily on conditioning, body mechanics and discipline, in order to build a strong base for more advanced training.
Aiki-Kids Classes
Aikido of Del Mar offers Kids classes for children between the ages of 5 and 9. The Aiki-Kids curriculum offers children the opportunity to learn some of the basic movements and techniques of Yoshinkan Aikido in an environment that balances discipline with play. We encourage our students to learn to respect themselves and others by building an understanding of the relationship between self awareness and compassion. At the same time we make room for nurturing their spontaneous playfulness and curiosity. The Aiki-Kids class is a wonderful place to give your children the opportunity to explore the many rewards of martial arts training, from body awareness, coordination and agility, to self discipline, respect and compassion.
