Good day everyone!
Thank you all for making another memorable Halloween class at Aikido Del Mar to finish a great training month in October. We had a wonderful turn out this year – parents and kids alike worked on their stomach muscles with laughter! In the kids class, both Angry Bird and Miss Kitty won the Aikido Halloween Costume Contest. In the youth class, Intoxa-COW was the winner who not only showcased his costume but also his astonishing aikido moves. Great job everyone! We appreciate all the fun, games, and photos you’ve shared with us.

As for the onset of November, Kevin Pickard Sensei and shodan Joe Cornwell Senpai attended the Muguruza Workshop in Los Angels. Jacques Muguruza Sensei holds an 8th degree black belt in Yoshinkan Aikido and is known for his gentle strength created by the unique softness of his heart. We are excited to learn more about his teachings from Kevin Sensei this week.

Many of you already know our brown belts Justin Couvignou and Elliot Couvignou from the adult class. We would like to take this opportunity to formally introduce them as senior and junior assistant instructors perceptively helping out the kids and youth class. Both of them have started their aikido training in the Aikido Del Mar kids and youth class and now they are able to take what they’ve learned to help those who came after. If you are able to take advantage of our weekend training, you will find Justin and Elliot giving individual instructions to our youngsters.

Happy training everyone! Hope to see you all very soon.
Hello Aikido Del Mar Kids and Youth!
Halloween is just around the corner and we are excited to celebrate another Aikido Del Mar Halloween Dress Up Class this Wednesday Oct 30th. Find your favorite outfits that you can wear comfortably to class, and we will have an opportunity for you to show off your cool aikido moves.
In both the Aiki-Kids and Aiki-Youth classes we will be hosting a custom contest based on who’s got the coolest moves matched with their character. So be prepared to have some fun!
Happy Training Everyone.
Dear students and parents of students at Aikido Del Mar,
Many of you know that I have been traveling quite a bit for my doctoral research in the last couple of years, and my time at the dojo has been increasingly sparse as a result. But this last departure in mid August marked a major transition. I moved to Los Angeles with my fiancé, Micki, who some of you have had the pleasure of meeting and training with, and just under two weeks ago we got married! Needless to say, things have been quite busy since I last saw many of you. The move to Los Angeles is great for Micki’s work and my own, but unfortunately it means that I won’t be around the dojo much at all. Without any foreseeable plan to return to life in San Diego, Kevin and I decided that this was a good time for me to formally leave my position as a partner and instructor at Aikido Del Mar. With all of the other changes going on in my life, it has taken some time for this to sink in. And by now, I’m sure you are all quite used to not having me around, but I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for being a part Aikido Del Mar, and for making it such a beautiful and rewarding part of my life. Since Kevin and I started the dojo back in the spring of 2008, it has been the joyful and hard won perseverance of our students that really made it worth doing. Frequently, it is difficult for students to understand how valuable their learning process is to their teachers, but there is no doubt in my mind that you have taught me more in the last five years than I have taught you, and for this I cannot thank you enough.
I will still drop in now and again when I am in the area. And if you are in Los Angeles, you can be sure to find me training with David Fryberger sensei at Aikido on Ventura, which is its own kind of home coming for me, as this where I met my teacher Jaques Payet sensei, and also where Kevin and I met almost a decade ago now.
I wish all of you the best in your continued training and in your lives, and look forward to the next time we meet.
Testing is complete and we are happy to see such dedication and progress in all our classes. Everyone tested have passed their belt/kyu test — congratulations!
It was wonderful to see our new yellow belts in the kids class as they are being freshly introduced to aikido.

We are especially proud of our youth class as they gave their best to prepare and test with intense focus. We can honestly say it was one of the strongest tests we’ve ever seen.

In the adult class, we felt blessed to witness two families progressing together onto the next level. Nicely done!

A special thank you to all of our aikido friends for making the post-test potluck and kids pool party so enjoyable. It was lovely to share food, photos, and laughters with one another. We are honored to party with such awesome friends and looking forward to more joy to come.
Good Day Everyone!
Our next belt test is scheduled for this coming weekend, Saturday, September 28th during normal class time.
We will be conducting an extra training session for the kids on Saturday morning from 10:30am-11:00am. If you can, take advantage of this time. You can also find Videos of How-To Ukemi to help your child(ren) start their test preparation at home. We have seen more confidence and less stress in those children who have had support at home.
As for the youth and adult class, we urge you to take advantage of the open-mat time prior to the adult class tonight. Several instructors will be around for questions and individualized help. You can also use the black belt training hour after adult class for more individualized help.
Aikido is not about doing everything perfectly all the time, but the commitment in trying our best with everything we do, and the continuing dedication and hard-work we put into each and every moment. We are happy to see such wonderful progress in all the classes and looking forward to more joy on the mats with you.

It’s going to be a hot labor day weekend here in San Diego! We are looking forward to aikido training in our air-conditioned dojo and hopefully we can break a sweat and enjoy a few extra ukemi.

For Monday, the kids class is canceled and the youth will join the adult class for some advanced training. Here is the schedule below:
- Aiki-Kids Saturday 11:00-11:40am
- Aiki-Youth Saturday 11:45-12:25pm
- AdultClass Saturday 12:30-1:30pm
- Kenshu Training Saturday 1:30pm-3:00pm
Aiki-Kids Monday CANCELED
- Aiki-Youth & Adult Class Monday 7:00-8:30pm
Our next belt test is scheduled on Saturday, September 28th. Test preparation will begin soon. Please let us know if you or your child(ren) will be able to test on that date or the following Monday. We are also planning to have a potluck celebration after the adult class test that day so please let us know if you are planning to join. We need a headcount before setting the place.
As for aikido in hot weather, we would like to share with you the training in Japan. Here is a blog by the full-time Kenshusei students from Kyoto. It was a wonderful way to get to know training and living in Japan as we watch the progress of our friends overseas.
Happy training everyone!
