April Aikido News

We are happy to report our week-long testing in April went smoothly in all three classes. All students invited to test passed onto the next level. Congratulations everyone for your dedicated training.

Heather is the proud recipient of the April Spirit Award

As April came to a close, we were glad to recognize another student from the youth class to receive the Spirit Award in the month of April. Heather Nguyen started aikido a little more than 6 months ago and each class she brings a spirit of joy to our training. Heather is able to flow with ease and grace in her movement due to her wonderful attitude. She doesn’t get discouraged when techniques don’t come easily or when she makes a mistake. She just giggles light-heartedly and keeps on training. O-sensei emphasized that true aikido is expressed in the spirit of joy and Heather has certainly set a great example for us all.

We’ve also heard some amazing stories of how students from all three classes have “miraculously” improved the quality of their lives as a result of aikido. Last night the parent of a 6-year old aiki-kid informed us how his daughter’s math grade sky-rocked since she started training with us. Her autism no longer isolates her from interacting with other children. She is becoming more and more comfortable following guidance as well as expressing her needs. Another boy in the same class were not able to pay attention for more than 5 seconds can now stay focused in school and at home. He is setting a great example for his little brother to follow. We are touched by these stories and are looking forward to more!

Enjoy the month of May and happy training everyone!

Spirit of Aikido

Great day everyone! Most students had the opportunity to test today in all three classes. We are happy to see the continuing progress within everyone. And we are thrilled to see the supportive environment created by all the loving families. There is a strong sense of community – a wonderful spirit of aikido in our dojo and we are blessed to be training with you all.

March News and Upcoming Testing!

Hello everyone!

As many of you are aware that our next test will take place on Saturday, April 13th. All classes have already begin to partake in test preparation. Students are welcome to brush up on their training during our open mat hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:10 to 7:30pm. We will also be hosting an extra help session for the kids next Saturday, April 6th from 10:30 to 11:00am.

We are trilled that many parents are helping their children at home to become comfortable with the three ukemi. We recommend that you use a soft carpeted open area in your home for this “play time” with your child. Many children have also found great value in watching the ukemi instructional videos we prepared here.

Congrats Benjamin – we recognize you for your dedicated excellence!

As the end of March approaches, it is now time to announcement our spirit award recipient for this month. Benjamin is not only talented but he matches a great amount of deliberate practice to consistently focus with intensity yet in a fun-loving relaxed manner. As we know from Geoffrey Colvin’s book “Talent is Overrated” that talent nor hard work alone can help you be great. It is a dedication to this deliberate practice and smart focus that can really help someone to stand out. Benjamin can often make his techniques look so easy with great precision. That is because of all the intense training he placed upon himself prior to the techniques from how he does his basic movements to how he treats others. It is our pleasure to recognize Benjamin’s stance for excellence.

We are also very thankful for the thoughtfulness of many parents and students for their help in setting up the mats, bringing snacks and gifts for others in the class, and sharing their aikido experience to better the lives of others. We truly are in a wonderful coherent community. Thank you for making Aikido Del Mar a part of your life!

Happy Training Everyone!

February News!

Hello Everyone,

It has been a productive training month with Jacques Payet Shihan’s visit to Southern California. His aikido teaching as well as his way of being touched us deeply. If you missed his seminars from Los Angeles Aikido, here is a video clip of his teaching we found extremely valuable.

In Aikido Del Mar, many youth students joined the adults in the seminars and have too learned ways to obtain better balance, easier ways to connect and more fluid movements.

In the month of February, we would like to recognize one student in particular – Eeshan Zele, who always trains with a sincere attitude and tireless self-discipline. During the seminar, Eeshan was able to pay close attention to Payet Shihan’s suggestions and internalize the teachings for self-improvement. Eeshan was able to take his learning onward each step of the way. Eeshan’s humble attitude, willingness to learn, and his eagerness to build upon his learning is a great demonstration of the aiki-spirit. We are happy to say “congratulations Eeshan Zele for winning the Spirit Award in the month of February!”

January News!

We had a very successful Kagami Biraki to kick off 2013. Many parents and students came to help set up prior to the demonstration. Congratulations to all the students who demonstrated an aspect of aikido they were working on. The potluck afterwards was extra yummy this year thanks to all the contributions from the three classes. We have captured a few moments on video from that weekend and would like to share with you.

As January comes to a close, we would also like the recognize a student who consistently shows up to class with focus and tireless dedication. This month we gave the “Spirit Award” to Ayush. In Yoshinkan Aikido, the direct translation of Yoshinkan is “hall of cultivation of the spirit”. Spirit training is foundational to aikido as where we choose to focus our attention and how to direct our body, mind, and energy for unification within the self. Ayush from the youth class consistently makes the choice to stay grounded regardless what is happening around him. He focuses on a sense of precision in his movements and always pushes himself to reach for more. The cultivation of his inner strength also sets as a guiding post for others to follow. Congratulations Ayush for being a great example for us all.
